Shark Cage

The Shark Cage program is a powerful, evidence-based initiative designed to support women and individuals who have experienced violence or abuse from cis-male partners. It was developed by Melbourne psychologist Ursula Benstead and is currently running with great success at our residential Hope Centre in Bairnsdale. The program offers a safe and supportive space to explore human rights, healthy relationship models, and pathways to healing from past trauma.

Over the course of eight weeks, participants engage in weekly two-hour sessions that delve into the different forms of abuse experienced in relationships and how these relate to violations of their fundamental human rights. The program is voluntary, and many participants have found it so impactful that they have recommended it to others within the community.

One of the highlights of the program is its final group activity: the creation of a mural. In this expressive artwork, sharks symbolize harmful behaviours and patterns, while dolphins represent the positive qualities that nurture and sustain healthy relationships – such as kindness, respect, and love.

The Shark Cage program not only fosters healing, but also empowers participants with the knowledge and confidence to build safer, more respectful relationships moving forward.
